Did you know the cinnamon sticks that you pick off a super market shelf is not real Cinnamon?

The cinnamon you normally purchase from a store is Cassia or Chinese Cinnamon which has a very high content of the compound Coumarin which is known to cause Liver damage if used in excess. 

The Ceylon Cinnamon however is very beneficial with very trace amounts of Coumarin. If you are using cinnamon and Honey for weight loss purposes or as a health supplement, then it's best to use the Ceylon Cinnamon instead of the Chinese Cinnamon or Cassia. 

Even in terms of taste the Ceylon cinnamon is much pleasanter compared to the very strong cassia cinnamon. 

How do we spot the real cinnamon?

  • The bark of Ceylon cinnamon will be very thin compared to the Chinese cinnamon.
  • The Ceylon cinnamon will have multiple layers while Cassia will have a single layer. 
  • Ceylon cinnamon will be light brown in colour compared to the reddish brown Cassia variety.
  • The taste of Ceylon cinnamon will be milder with a tinge of sweetness.

Healthy and nice taste

I add this cinnamon to the thermos of coffee I brew in the morning and take it with me to work. It gives the coffee a very unusual, noble taste, and I think it also helps my digestion. Since it is not the cheapest ingredient of my coffee, I hope I will not overdose it :)
