A taste of Coorg’s fleeting bloom
The Journey Begins
The Coorg — or Kodava — region is famous for its vast coffee plantations.
For someone who loves driving, the roads here are pure joy.
Long winding roads snake through dense forests and coffee estates, climbing hills and dipping into valleys.
After nearly a full day navigating these beautiful curves, we reached a small town along the Kerala–Karnataka border, where a young beekeeper manages his bee boxes.
👨🌾 A Beekeeper’s Choice
His story stayed with us.
He studied engineering.
But instead of pursuing a corporate career, he chose to return to the land where he grew up.
For him, working with bees and supporting his community brought far greater satisfaction.
His bee boxes are spread across several coffee plantations throughout Coorg.
During our visit, he even took us to an orphanage run by nuns where he maintains bee colonies, helping the institution generate additional income.
💛 A Different Kind of Care
While opening one of the hives, he said something we will never forget:
“The bees are like my pets. I don’t like to see even one of them suffer.”
Because of this, he refuses to smoke the bees before opening the hive, even lightly.
The result?
We all received a generous dose of bee stings.
Clearly, the bees were not particularly pleased with our curiosity.
But bee stings are said to do more good than harm, so we accepted them as part of the experience.
🍯 Tasting the Hive
Then came the best part.
We tasted the honey directly from the hive.
It was extraordinary.
A delicate sweetness, followed by a faint bitterness that reminded me of freshly brewed coffee.
After years of tasting thousands of honey samples while building Honey & Spice, my palate immediately picked up the subtle coffee nectar note.
Interestingly, neither the team nor even the beekeeper noticed it.
That moment reminded us how fascinating honey can be.
Every landscape leaves its signature.
🌸 The Magic of Coffee Blossoms
What makes coffee blossom honey even more remarkable is how brief the opportunity is.
After the first rains of the season, the coffee plants begin preparing to bloom.
Then, almost suddenly, the plantations transform.
Thousands of tiny white flowers appear, filling the air with a fragrance often compared to jasmine.
These blossoms last only about nine days.
That short window is when bees work relentlessly, collecting nectar and pollen.
As they move between flowers, they also help pollinate the plants, increasing coffee yield by 20–25%.
For those few days, the entire plantation becomes a buzzing symphony.
✨ A Honey That Captures a Moment
From that brief moment comes a honey that carries the delicate memory of those blossoms.
Produced in extremely small quantities, this is truly a collector’s edition honey.
