No Bees, No Food: The Urgent Need To Save Pollinators

No Bees, No Food: The Urgent Need To Save Pollinators

They say, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," but have you ever wondered what would happen if apples didn't exist? How is it even possible that apples wouldn't exist?

The truth is, without bees, many of our favorite fruits, including apples, wouldn't be around.

So, the next time you enjoy a crisp apple, remember the tiny pollinators that made it possible.

Protecting bees isn't just about preserving nature—it's about safeguarding the foods we love.

How did World Bee Day Originate?

World Bee Day is celebrated every year on May 20th, marking the birthday of Anton Janša, a Slovenian beekeeper from the 18th century who is considered a pioneer of modern beekeeping.

Janša introduced innovative techniques and emphasized the importance of bees in agriculture, laying the foundation for contemporary apiculture practices.

In recognition of his contributions and to raise awareness about the vital role of bees in our ecosystem, the United Nations officially declared May 20th as World Bee Day in 2017.

Why Should You Care About World Bee Day?

This is more than just a date– it's a cause.

Bees, even though tiny creatures, contribute to the balance in nature. Various plants, animals, and our livelihoods depend on them. We should not only become aware of the crucial role that honeybees play in the ecosystem but also take action against the threats to their survival.

So, let’s talk about this year’s World Bee Day.

World Bee Day (2025)

Theme for the Year:

“Bee Inspired by Nature to Nourish Us All”.

What does the slogan indicate?

This theme emphasizes that by observing and learning from nature, we can adopt practices that support pollinator health, thereby ensuring food security and biodiversity

What does this day call for?

This day serves as a call to action for individuals, communities, and policymakers to protect and promote pollinator-friendly environments–providing native plants & avoiding pesticides.

How is this day celebrated?

Across the globe, this day is marked by celebrating various events ranging from educational workshops to urban gardening campaigns and farmer awareness programs.

Spotlight on India

In Gujarat, over 11,300 farmers have received training and financial aid totaling ₹8.76 crore to boost beekeeping efforts, turning it into a sustainable livelihood

More Than Just Honey: The Role Of Bees In Our Ecosystem

Don’t bees just produce honey? The sweet truth is, they do more than just that.

Valentines would be incomplete without the chocolates and flowers, Shower routines would be incomplete without the soaps or shampoos, and Indian households would be incomplete without the spice Tadka.

All this depends on bees!

Bees help pollination––pollination helps grow plants and flowers––plants produce various fruits and vegetables.

Rs 100/KG seems a lot for tomatoes and fruits? What if I told you that these fruits and vegetables would become 10x expensive if bees were to be extinct?

How? Because various fruits and vegetables heavily rely on bees to grow and produce.

Without them, our plates would just empty, wouldn't they?

Extinction of bees not only limits our dietary options and nutrition but also some jobs that depend on their survival like–

  • Beekeepers
  • Farmers
  • Mead Maker
  • Entomologist

Fascinating to imagine how human jobs depend on these tiny creatures whom we often find insignificant, no?

Want to save your jobs? Then save the bees!

A Simple Guide To Save The Bees: What Endangers Them? What Measures To Take?

Studies have shown a 25% decline in wild-forest bees in the last 2 decades.

Here are a few things that endangers our little friends-

  • Microplastic contamination
  • Loss of habitat due to urbanization
  • Chemicals and pesticides
  • Reduction of flowering plants to feed upon

Want to Bee The Solution?

Some simple things you can do at home-

  • Plant native flowers that bloom all year long.
  • Avoid use of chemicals and pesticides in your gardens.
  • Providing clean water sources for bees to hydrate.
  • Creating bee habitats like bee nests/ bee hotels.
  • Supporting local beekeepers by purchasing their honey
  • Creating awareness about the importance of bees

Simple right? Through these small and easy practices, we not only save their homes but also our homes too.

How We Celebrate Bees at Honey & Spice?

Did you know that to produce just one pound of honey, bees must visit approximately 2 million flowers and fly over 55,000 miles?

Each bee contributes only about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.

At Honey & Spice, we don't make honey—we simply bottle it. Our entire livelihood depends on the hard work of bees.

Every day, we reflect on how these tiny creatures shape our lives and our business. Their dedication inspires us to honor their efforts by keeping their honey pure: unadulterated, unfiltered, and unheated.

By doing so, we ensure that the natural goodness crafted by bees reaches you just as they made it.

Supporting bees isn't limited to rural areas or large-scale agriculture.

Whether it's planting bee-friendly flowers on a balcony, supporting local honey producers, or participating in community-driven conservation projects, each action contributes to a healthier environment for bees and, by extension, ourselves.

In fact…

This week, we're adding a little extra love to every order—a bee-friendly seed ball! These seed balls are made of native wildflower seeds, clay, and compost.

Just toss them in a sunny spot—no digging needed—and let nature do the rest. They’ll grow into flowers that feed bees and other pollinators. Check our homepage banner to learn more and join us in giving back to the bees

Let’s not just enjoy the sweetness; let’s honor the source.
